ADVENT: DAY 26

Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church - Outreach - Blogs - TEEZing Out The Roots

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined.  You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder.  For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.  For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire.  For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom.  He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore.  The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.”—Isaiah 9:2-7

The people who walked in darkness

Have seen a great light

Those who lived in a land of deep darkness

On them light has shined

Dark: a descriptor we synonymize with

Ignorant.

Uncivilized.

Depressed.

Violent.

Scary.

Evil.

Dark: a descriptor we apply to

Skin.

People.

Land.

The dark continent

The heart of darkness

But these connotations, these associations, these applications come from

White.

Power.

The Wonderful Counselor read in the Scriptures that

Black is beautiful.

The Mighty God knew history and praised

The Queen of the South.

The Everlasting Father lived in

Egypt, on the dark continent

The Prince of Peace was

Dark-skinned

The people who walked in darkness

Have seen a great light

Those who lived in a land of deep darkness

On them light has shined

In other words:

The people who walked in darkness walked in beauty

They have seen a great light, for light shines brightest in the fabric of darkness

Those who lived in a land of deep darkness lived in the land of the Queen of the South

On them light has shined, for that light chose to become incarnate in their flesh

This light of darkness has broken

Their yoke of burden

The bar across their shoulders

The rod of their oppressor

As on the day of Midian

So it will be again

And again

Until there is justice and righteousness

Until there is true peace

A child has been born for us

A son given to us

Authority rests upon his shoulders

And he is named

Wonderful Counselor

Mighty God

Everlasting Father

Prince of Peace
