Superb choral music is an important part of the life of Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church (MAPC). There are a number of choral groups at MAPC that offer volunteer singers an opportunity to participate in this important ministry, both for liturgies on Sunday mornings and for seasonal services, as well as on the church’s Saint Andrew Music Society concert series. The Church Choir and Children’s Choirs and T(w)een Choir play a special role in leading and enhancing worship on Sundays and for special services throughout the year, while the Saint Andrew Chorale provides an opportunity for members of the congregation and friends from the surrounding community to present great sacred choral works from across the centuries on our Saint Andrew Music Society concert series. The New York City Children’s Chorus offers a graded choral program for children, ages 4-18 in the NYC area, who wish to receive a rigorous and rewarding choral music education, as well a wealth of meaningful performance opportunities on our own concert series and in the wider community.
MAPC’s Church Choir is the backbone of the MAPC music ministry, consisting of a core octet of professional singers and 15 to 20 dedicated volunteers who provide inspiring music at the 11:15 am service on Sunday mornings from September through May, and for special services throughout the year, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 8:30 to 9:45 pm (September through May) following the Saint Andrew Chorale rehearsal, and on Sundays from 10:30 to 11 am. Download the 2013-2014 full-season choir schedule (rtf) and the list of Liturgical Choral Music (pdf) that were sung in worship from September 2013 to May 2014. Those who have good sight reading skills and have a blending section voice are encouraged to contact Dr. Andrew Henderson for further information about singing at MAPC!
From Memorial Day weekend through the end of July, our Summer Choir provides musical leadership and choral music for the Sunday morning worship services at 10:30 am. The choir meets to rehearse at 9:30 am on Sunday mornings. This is an excellent opportunity for Church Choir members, Saint Andrew Chorale members and friends from the congregation and NYC choral community to join us on a more informal basis to sing a wide variety of music throughout the summer months. Download the 2013 Summer Choir music schedule (pdf) for more information.
Founded by Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church (MAPC) in 1965, the Saint Andrew Chorale is a 45-voice choral society based at MAPC. The group is composed of members of our Church Choir and professional octet, members of the congregation, and many friends from the wider community of New York City.
The Chorale rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7 to 8:20 pm in the Sanctuary and presents three or four concerts per season with the Saint Andrew Orchestra, comprised of New York's finest freelance orchestral players, and guest instrumentalists. Members of the Chorale are also invited to join with MAPC's Church Choir for special services such as Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter morning. The Chorale's repertoire is extraordinarily wide-ranging and focuses on the great sacred choral masterworks from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries. View a listing of the Chorale's repertoire since 1965.
During its 47th (2011-2012) Season the Chorale sang concerts with professional orchestras and instrumentalists including concerts featuring two Glorias by Vivaldi, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, the premiere of a new work by MAPC's Director of Music & Organist emeritus, John Weaver, plus works by Bingham, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Monteverdi, Vaughan Williams. The Saint Andrew Chorale will also be featured in our 7th Annual Carol Sing featuring excerpts from Britten's Ceremony of Carols.
The Saint Andrew Chorale rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7 pm to 8:20 pm from September through May. Download the full-season rehearsal schedule (rtf). Membership in the choir is by audition. Singers interested in joining the Chorale should contact Dr. Andrew Henderson, Director of Music & Organist.
MAPC gives children aged 5-12 the opportunity to make special contributions to our Worship services with the Children’s Choir and Cherub Choir. The choirs rehearse as a part of the weekly Kids’ Club program on Wednesday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 pm.
The MAPC Children’s Choir and Cherub Choir offer an opportunity for children in elementary and middle school to participate in a program that focuses on the development of children’s voices, singing music of high artistic integrity and developing an understanding of musical notation. The repertoire of the Children’s Choir encompasses a wide range of choral literature for young voices, including the works of classical composers, African-American spirituals, traditional and modern hymnody and newly composed works. The choir sings at the 11:15 am service at different times throughout the school year, including the annual Carol Sing and the Christmas Eve Family Service. Members of the Children’s Choir also sing with MAPC’s Church Choir on Easter Sunday and on other Sundays throughout the year. Children will have the opportunity to sing under the direction of Mary Huff, Associate Director of Music, and the Director of Music, Andrew Henderson.
MAPC also has a choir for its tiniest singers! As a part of the weekly Kids’ Club program, children ages 4 and 5 have the opportunity to join the Church Mice group and enjoy activities that include vocal exploration, rhythmic play, simple and partner songs, and healthy beginning vocal instruction.
We have recently formed a T(w)een Choir at MAPC, for ages 13 and up. The T(w)een Choir joins the Children’s Choir and Church Choir in singing anthems and leading worship on Sundays approximately once per month, and rehearses on Sundays in the Choir Room immediately after the 11:15 am worship service.
For more information about the Children’s Choirs or Teen Choir, please contact Mary Huff, Associate Director of Music.
