Do you know what Jesus talked about more than anything else? The Kingdom of God. That’s not surprising, but do you know what his second-favorite subject was? Money! Jesus actually talked about how we should think about and use our material possessions much more than he did about prayer, faith, or love! Yet we rarely take the opportunity to thoughtfully and honestly explore how our faith impacts our understanding and use of money. This Lent, we invite you to take that opportunity and make this small group your Lenten discipline. This discussion group will meet for four weeks starting on February 25; each week, we will explore a different aspect of the relationship between our faith and our money. Do you feel uncomfortable with how little (or how much) money you have? Are you concerned about the power of money in our society or in the church? Do you think money is the root of all evil? Do you think money is a sign of God’s favor? Then this group is for you!
The Rev. J.C. Austin will be the pastoral resource for this group, but the group meetings will be facilitated and attended solely by members. We will utilize the standard covenant of small groups, which includes a commitment to free and open discussion within the group and to confidentiality outside of the group. If you have questions or want to sign up for the group, please contact J.C. Austin at 212-288-8920 x242 (e-mail jca@mapc.com). We hope you will take advantage of this special opportunity to think spiritually about money!

Members of our congregation, joined by parents of the MAPC Day School, served as anonymous “angels” for 161 children this year, providing gifts of clothing, books, and toys for Christmas. Children were referred to MAPC from two sources: eleven were participants in the LEAP Saturday morning reading program, and 150 were referred by the Church of Gethsemane in Brooklyn.
In planning for the Christmas Angel program this year, the Outreach Committee determined to discontinue our strictly seasonal affiliation with Prison Fellowship Ministries’ Angel Tree Christmas gift program and to increase our support to Church of Gethsemane, which provides an MAPC-supported home church for its constituency of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated persons and their families. Families of incarcerated persons who are members of Gethsemane worship together and enjoy fellowship year-round. An affiliated organization, Justice-Works, assists prisoners and their families with social services.
The congregational response to the needs of these children was overwhelming. Every child received an article of clothing and a book or toy. I and the other program volunteers were greatly moved by the obvious thoughtfulness of MAPC’s gift-givers. It was truly remarkable to see the quantity of gifts provided and the care with which donors wrapped, tagged, and bagged their gifts. Without a doubt, we have a wonderfully caring church family.
Volunteers combined gifts into family groups and bagged them together in large plastic bags for pick-up by Gethsemane. The sacks of toys and clothing filled the lobby coat room, and Gethsemane had to make two trips to MAPC to pick up the bounty! Gethsemane held their party on December 10, and we understand that it was a great success. Thank you to all volunteers and gift givers!
