Christianity faces no greater challenge in the 21st century than understanding Islam. What are the fundamentals of the Islamic faith and how is it practiced today? This class is meant to lay the groundwork for authentic interfaith dialogue in which people can speak openly and with integrity about what they believe.

The music of brothers Joseph and Michael Haydn will be the focus of the first Saint Andrew Chorale concert of the season on Sunday, November 19 at 3 pm. Michael Haydn, Joseph’s younger brother and actually better known in the Austrian musical circles of their day, has been almost totally eclipsed by the fame of his older sibling. It is fitting that we pay tribute to “the other Haydn” this year as 2006 marks the 200th anniversary of his death. A mixture of well-known and undeservedly lesser-known works by both composers will be sung, including Joseph Haydn’s beloved Lord Nelson Mass and rarely-heard Salve Regina in G minor for four solo singers. Michael Haydn will be represented by two early sacred works: Veni Sancte Spiritus for chorus and soloists (based on a Pentecost text) and a short work of Marian devotion for solo soprano and strings, Ave Regina in A major. The Chorale will be joined by the strings, trumpets and timpani of the Saint Andrew Orchestra, with our eight professional singers taking part as soloists. Professional childcare will be available by reservation in advance by contacting Margaret Williamson, 212-288-8920, x267 or mew@mapc.com.
Admission to the concert is by suggested donation of $20 ($15 for students/seniors) available at the door. Door receipts to concerts such as this often do not cover the costs. That is where the Friends of the Saint Andrew Music Society (“SAMS”) come in. Friends of SAMS actually provide the cornerstone for the Chorale and concert series with their annual gifts. Thanks to all of you who have renewed your support this year and to the twenty donors who gave to SAMS for the first time or increased their gift over previous years. Have you become a Friend of SAMS or renewed your support? Checks may be written to Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church with “SAMS” in the memo section. Send to MAPC, 921 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10021, Att. Andrew Henderson, Director of Music. Donors are recognized in printed concert programs. SAMS giving levels are: Friend (Gifts to $99); Associate ($100-249); Sponsor ($250-499); Benefactor ($500-999); Angel ($1,000-2,499) and Archangel (Gifts of $2,500 and above). Your support will allow wonderful music to ring out each Sunday afternoon during the program year in our beautiful sanctuary. Thank you!
Andrew Henderson,
Director of Music & Organist

Beginning in 1936 he served as a reporter for the Chicago Daily News and, after wartime Naval service in India and China, was that newspaper’s correspondent in South Asia in 1946-48, covering the end of British rule and the launching of independent India along with its partitioning to create Pakistan. He frequently interviewed the leaders Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah. From 1951 to 1961 he was Executive Director of the American Universities Field Staff. In 1961 he became Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs where he remained until 1965 under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Following that, Dr. Talbot served four years as U.S. Ambassador to Greece. More recently he was for eleven years President of the Asia Society, the period during which the current Asia Society building was constructed. All are welcome to hear Ambassador Talbot speak. The Mid-Timers will have a guided tour of the Feeding Desire exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum on Friday evening, October 20. We’ll meet at the museum at 5:45 pm so that we can begin the tour promptly at 6 pm.The full title of the exhibit is, “Feeding Desire: Design and the Tools of the Table, 1500-2005, and the museum describes it as: “A journey through the evolution of Western dining from the Renaissance to the present, Feeding Desire features objects from Cooper-Hewitt’s world-class collections. The exhibition will address the development of utensil forms, innovations in production and materials, etiquette, and flatware as social commentary.” Following the tour, we will have dinner together at a nearby restaurant. The cost of the tour will be determined by how many participants we have, but will be less than $10 per person. This year’s fall Seniors Unlimited bus trip will be an excursion to Duke Farms, a 2,700 acre estate in Hillsborough, New Jersey. In the morning, we will tour the Country Manor, then enjoy lunch at the Outdoor Eatery on the estate and have a guided bus tour through the property in the afternoon. The cost for the trip, including lunch, is $30, and reservations must be made with Margaret Williamson at the church, 212-288-8920 x271. Please note that we cannot guarantee your seat on the bus until we have received payment for the trip! If you do not receive a flyer with a registration form through the Seniors Unlimited mailing list, please contact Margaret and she will help you.

Bring a project you’re working on, get help deciphering instructions, or work on scarves and hats for the residents of Inwood House or for homeless men and women served by the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter. Thousands of people from churches of all denominations participate in mission/work trips every year–and almost always report that it is a profound, life-changing experience. MAPC members have the opportunity to join in such an experience and reach out in a very tangible way to those who are rebuilding their homes after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The Presbytery of New York City is sending a volunteer work team January 13-20, 2007, to help rebuild homes in Gulfport, Mississippi. The group will be working as volunteers of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, assigned to Westminster Presbyterian Church in the Presbytery of Mississippi. Skills needed are: carpentry, electrical, painting, roofing, engineers, general help, cooking, counseling, administration/computer help, and debris removal. You do not have to be a skilled laborer in order to be useful! Elbow grease, work clothes, a willing spirit and a bit of stamina are all that is needed.
Work trip participants will be housed either in the church or in one of the heated huts in the volunteer village constructed by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. Showers are available and group members need to bring their own bedding. The cost is $20/day for food and housing, plus transportation. Group travel arrangements will be made–or participants can drive and meet the group in Mississippi. The registration deadline is November 1. There is space for 25-40 participants. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
If you are unable to go, but would like to contribute to the trip, funds can be given for a Home Depot card that the group will use to purchase materials for the rebuilding work while they are there.
If you are interested in participating, please talk to J.C. Austin or Beverly Bartlett as soon as possible, and they will get you in touch with the appropriate people at the Presbytery office.
Have you discovered the Hood Library at MAPC yet? Tucked into a cozy space between the Church House Lobby and the elevators, the Hood Library is full of books available for borrowing: fiction, biography, current affairs, history and a religion section with resources for Biblical study, theological exploration and spiritual formation. The library is open to all in the MAPC community from 9:45 am to 1 pm on Sundays, except during the 11:15 am worship service. The library committee is continually updating the collection through book donations and purchases. Please avail yourself of this wonderful resource!
The Hood Library Committee will hold its annual fall book sale on Sunday, November 19 in the Church House Lobby. Books of all kinds will be available, including many “coffee table” books that may make a good Christmas gift. Come browse through the tables of books while you enjoy a cup of coffee and fellowship after worship.
