Issues Surrounding Email Communications from MAPC

Several of our members and friends have informed us that they suddenly stopped receiving email announcements and the weekly Pastors’ Letter. If you are in this group and have not yet advised the Church Office of your subscription’s termination, please let us know by sending an email to update@mapc.com. If you have never subscribed, you may do so by pointing your browser to the church’s home page, www.mapc.com, and clicking the Sign-up link on the lower right of the page, under “New and Noteworthy.” (or you may simply follow this link: http://www.mapc.com/html/email-signup.htm). After submitting the brief form, you should receive an “immediate” confirmation email from the service that distributes our mailings. While that’s what should happen, it sometimes does not, and that is the purpose of this article.

The church uses an email service provider called Topica for both the Pastors’ Letter and special announcements. The provider sends out the email, not the church. In recent months, many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and domain hosting services have installed strong filters and blocking devices to guard against spam and virus threats. While these filters are quite effective, they also create issues regarding the receipt of messages from legitimate mailing services. With the changing atmosphere of the Internet, an increasing number of ISPs are requiring that users confirm their subscriptions in order to receive messages from email service providers. We will therefore be sending confirmation messages to all of our present subscribers in the near future. We hope that everyone who wishes to receive our mailings will reply to the confirmation (even if you’ve already done that in the past).

Neither the church nor the mailing service ever cancels a subscription unless specifically asked to do so. If you have stopped receiving our emails, it may be due to filtering imposed by your ISP or by a security application installed on your computer that doesn’t recognize the provider’s address as “friendly.” We know that there are issues with Verizon.net, and if you have a Verizon account that is blocking us, you may want to consider subscribing under a free email service like Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc. until the Verizon issue is resolved. Earthlink subscribers can go to the SpamBlocker interface, locate any Topica email that was blocked, and instruct it to “add the contact.”

I am working with Topica.com toward the resolution of these issues, and we regret any inconvenience.

Look and See on January 22, 2006

Look and See. That’s what Library Awareness Sunday is all about. If you have never visited the Hood Library or you have never checked out a book, you are missing out on a great resource! So on January 22, during the Coffee Hour, you will have a chance to look, handle and select a book of your choice to borrow.

The Hood librarians will make it easy for you to browse through a large assortment of books displayed on tables in the Church House lobby. Books will be among the newest and most popular in the library’s collection. So while you are enjoying coffee and fellowship, do take time to look and see.

Also feel free to wander into the library. You’ll find hundreds of other books: novels, biographies, histories, psychology and, as you might expect, many books on religious topics. In fact, the library has an excellent collection of books in its Religion section where you could explore a question you’ve wondered about for a long time.

All church members and friends are invited and encouraged to look and see if there is at least one book you can’t resist. Books are on loan for 2 weeks except for the hefty ones, which are available for 3 weeks. Using the library on Sunday mornings can be easier than making a trip to the public library!

May we add: A word to the wise is enough! Essayists R. Steele and J. Addison remind us that “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
