Children’s Worship resumes in two groups on Sunday, September 11. After the children’s message in worship, those in grades K-2 may go to the Phillips Lounge behind the Sanctuary for a lesson and snack. They return to their parents during the Doxology, which follows the offering. Children who attend preschool and are ages 3-5 may go to the Youth Library, adjacent to the Church House Lobby. They remain there for the rest of the service for a Bible lesson, craft, music, prayer and snack. You may pick up your child after the service. The nursery is available on the 4th floor for children under three. Please Note: In order for your child to participate in one of the Children’s Worship classes, they must be the designated grade/age by September 1, 2005. If your child turns three in December, for example, please kindly wait until the next fall to start your child in the program.
Christian Education classes begin again on Sunday, September 11, at 10 am. Children in grades K-8 meet in classrooms on the fifth floor. Senior high youth meet in the Youth Lounge. There are several offerings each Sunday for Adult Education. A detailed brochure with the schedule will be mailed to your home in late August.
Confirmation Classes begin on Sunday, September 18, at 5:30 pm. Every Sunday night we will begin with dinner from 5:30 till 6 pm. Class will take place from 6 till 7:15 pm. We will then attend the 7:30 pm worship service together. This year’s teachers are Sarah Lien Finnerty and Jeff Dailey. If you are a youth and are interested in participating, please contact Sarah at slf@mapc.com or 212-288-8920 x235.
Mark your calendars! Kids’ Club begins on Wednesday, October 5, at 4 pm. Kids’ Club is open to all children, grades K-8. From 4 till 6:30 pm, we spend time together in fellowship, Bible study, choir, recreation and dinner. The children are divided into four age groups: preschool, grades K-2, grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. The new brochure and registration form will be sent out in August.
Our new Director of Music, Andrew Henderson, is searching for new members to augment both the Church Choir and Saint Andrew Chorale.
The Church Choir provides a key leadership role in the worship life of our congregation and rejoices in singing a variety of choral works to enhance our weekly liturgies. While expert sight-reading isn’t necessary, a keen ear and previous experience with music notation are desirable! In addition to a mid-week rehearsal, the choir rehearses on Sunday mornings prior to the 11:15 am service.
The Saint Andrew Chorale opens the doors to MAPC by offering church members and singers from outside the congregation a chance to join us in presenting great sacred choral works. The Chorale, as a part of the regular series of concerts offered by the Saint Andrew Music Society, provides a kind of musical outreach to our surrounding community by inviting audience members to hear these great works in a space for which they were written: the church! Some members of this larger group are seasoned choral singers and others are beginners in the practice of reading music. If you—or a friend or neighbor—might be interested in singing, please consider this important ministry of MAPC.
Both choirs rehearse on Thursday evenings; the time of both rehearsals is currently under consideration. You are welcome to contact Andrew with any questions you may have about joining the choirs. Please call 212-288-8920 x267, or e-mail him at aeh@mapc.com.

Welcome to a New Program Year at MAPC!

At its May meeting, Session approved a proposal discussed by the Deacons and the Congregational Nurture Committee to include a list of members’ birthdays in the monthly UPDATE. But don’t worry, we’re not going to reveal your age! Only the month and day will be published, so that members of the MAPC community can pass along birthday greetings. If you would prefer to keep your birthday a secret, please let us know by contacting Josephine McFadden at the church office, 212-288-8920 x238, or jmf@mapc.com. We’ll begin printing birthdays for each month in the September issue of UPDATE.
Plans are underway for small group gatherings in the fall. Small groups offer an experience in faith sharing and growth and provide a way to build stronger ties among members of the MAPC community. Consisting of 8-10 members, a small group meets on a weekly basis, usually for 8-12 weeks, depending on the curriculum that is being used. Often there are scripture passages or other material to read and reflect upon during the week and discuss at the next gathering. More details about the fall small groups will be available in early September and at the Ministry Fair on September 11. If you are interested in participating in a group, please contact Beverly Bartlett at 212-288-8920 x247, or e-mail bab@mapc.com.
It was such a success the first time that we decided to do it again! Bob and Susie Case have graciously offered their home for another all-church lasagna dinner on Friday evening, September 16. All are welcome–there is a playroom for children, with childcare provided. Please bring a $5 per person donation to help defray costs. We’ll have good food, musical entertainment and, of course, lots of conversation and laughter. MAPC members in the NYC area should receive a postcard invitation at the end of August. RSVP to Margaret Williamson, 212-288-8920 x271, or mew@mapc.com.
We will once again offer a Tai Chi class in the Parish Hall from 11 am to 12:15 pm on Wednesdays, beginning September 14. Newcomers are welcome to join! This will be a combination class, for those who have been in the Wednesday morning group for the past two years and those who are beginners. People of all ages are welcome to join. The cost is $15 per class, and scholarships are available if needed. Tai Chi is a gentle form of moving meditation that has many health benefits, including relieving stress and tension and improving balance.
The class will last for six weeks and, if there is enough interest, will be extended for a longer period. If you would like to join the class, please contact Margaret Williamson at 212-288-8920 x271, or mew@mapc.com.
Our first Families with Young Children gathering for the fall will be on Saturday morning, September 10, beginning at 10am on the Roof Garden. Families with children ages 5 and under are welcome to attend. There is a light breakfast available: bagels, fruit, snacks, coffee, tea and juice. This is a time for play, crafts, stories, and conversation and is a wonderful way to get to know other families in the church. Please let us know you’re coming by contacting Margaret Williamson at the church, 212-288-8920 x271, or mew@mapc.com.
The 20s/30s group will have their first Bible Study of the fall on Sunday, Sept. 18. Lunch will be available. Please meet downstairs in the Parish Hall during the Congregational Brunch/Coffee Hour after the 11:15 am worship service. The group will then move to the fifth floor for their meeting. Since this meeting will also serve as a planning time for the fall, please bring your ideas for discussion topics and activities.
The first weekly Congregational Brunch/Coffee Hour will be on September 18 after the 11:15 am worship service in the Parish Hall. Whether you would like to enjoy a meal or simply have a cup of coffee and a cookie, please plan to come downstairs to the Parish Hall and join in the fellowship after the service. Brunch will be available for $10 per person, $8 for seniors, and children under 12 eat free. The traditional coffee hour fare of coffee, tea and cookies will be free.
Our monthly Healing and Wholeness Services will resume on Wednesday, September 7, at 6 pm. These services are held on the first Wednesday of the month, September through May. The service includes prayers for healing and anointing and laying on of hands for those who would like to come forward and receive prayers for themselves or on behalf of others. The Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) says, “Healing was an integral part of the ministry of Jesus which the church has been called to continue as one dimension of its concern for the wholeness of people. Through services for wholeness, the church enacts in worship its ministry as a healing community.” (W-3.5401).
The Healing and Wholeness worship services at MAPC are one of the many ways in which our church strives to be faithful to the call to continue Jesus’ ministry of making people whole. In our society, where individuals, communities and countries are more and more fractured, our prayers for healing and wholeness for ourselves, our loved ones, our neighbors and our world are critically needed. Come to the monthly Healing and Wholeness services and find what those who regularly attend have found—“a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole… and heal the sin-sick soul.”
For our first meeting of the fall, we will welcome a member of the Pearls of Wisdom touring ensemble of Elders Share the Arts, a nationally recognized community arts organization. The Pearls are “elders who transform their memories into narrative art—the art of storytelling.” Their stories cover a wide range of topics: immigration and labor, the Depression and prosperity, war and peace, culture, family, tradition and home. After telling her story, our visiting Pearl will engage us in telling our own stories.
The Pearls of Wisdom have presented their stories in a wide range of venues—from schools, libraries and senior centers to museums and cultural centers. The Pearls have enthralled audiences at Lincoln Center, the Museum of the City of New York and the United Nations.
Please join us for this afternoon of celebrating our stories. A time of fellowship will follow the program. Please let us know you are coming, so we’ll have plenty of refreshments. RSVP to Margaret Williamson, 212-288-8920 x271, or mew@mapc.com.
