MAPC UPDATE

Vol. XXX, No. 9

October 2004

Introducing Our New
Seminarian, Camille Cook

Camille Cook, a second year student at Princeton Theological Seminary, has joined the MAPC staff as our seminarian for the next two years. A native of Minnesota, Camille grew up Roman Catholic. When Camille began to experience a call to ministry, recognizing that ordination would not be a possibility for her in the Roman church, she began to explore the possibility of another Christian affiliation. Ultimately, Camille became Presbyterian, joining the House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she is under the care of its session and an Inquirer in the Presbytery of Twin Cities.

Camille CookCamille is a 2003 graduate of Vanderbilt University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and Psychology, and graduated Cum laude, with honors in religious studies. While at Vanderbilt, she spent the spring of 2002 at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, engaged in Central and Eastern European Jewish Studies. An avid sportswoman, she was a member and Captain of Vanderbilt University’s varsity women’s crew team. This summer she completed Clinical Pastoral Education at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her interests include mountaineering, tennis, skiing, traveling, swimming and rowing.

Camille has been deeply involved in camping through the Salvation Army, having served as Assistant Director and then Director of the Army’s Lakewood Day Camp in Maplewood, MN. She has served as a home school tutor for high school students while in college in Nashville, TN. In the summer of 2001, she participated in the Salvation Army’s Summer Missions program in the Ukraine.

Camille will be working with the children’s worship program on a weekly basis during the 9 am service, and periodically at the 11:15 am service, assisting with Sunday School at various age levels, including helping to teach the Foundations of Christian Faith adult education series, participating in worship leadership at 11:15, and staffing and leading the 20s/30s Group’s twice-a-month Bible studies. She will preach periodically at the Healing and Wholeness services, as well as on Good Friday, do some limited hospital and nursing home visitation, and engage in a program of study in Reformed worship, church administration, evangelism, stewardship and Christian education. Please take time to introduce yourself to Camille and extend to her your own welcome.

The Hood Library

Win - Win Now!

Yes, now is the time to win - win. Not yesterday or today, but on Sunday your Hood Library book is due. You win by not having to pay a 50¢ fine per week overdue. The library wins by having the book available to loan to the next ready-reader. So please tie a bow around your finger to remember your borrowed book is due now. Hand your book to a librarian on duty or place it in the return box on the window sill in the Hood Library.

How else can one win - win? By just visiting the library to look over the new books on display. Wow! What a choice! Let the library know what type of book you want: Mysterious? Biographical?, Historical? Spiritual? Psychological? And more...just ask.

The Library Committee want the Hood Library to be the best Church Library it can be as a resource for members and friends. You can help by making suggestions for books and placing them in the new suggested box in the library.

Here are some winning titles of books added this fall: My Life in Saudi Arabia (Inside the Kingdom), The Accidental Tourist, The Spiral Staircase, The Cat who Brought Down the House, God’s Secretaries, Big Russ and Me, and Bound for the Promised Land.

St. Andrew Chorale Sings Rossini

On Sunday, November 21 at 4 pm the St. Andrew Chorale will present its first concert of the 2004-05 season, performing the Petite Messe Solennelle by Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868).

After many years of “retirement” as a composer, years in which he enjoyed the tremendous financial and popular success of his vast operatic output, Rossini composed this outstanding setting of the mass. Naturally, one hears music similar to that of his operas, but there is also present a sincerity and power that sets this work apart from the works composed for the stage. It was composed in 1863 and first performed at the consecration of the small private chapel of the Countess Louise Pillet-Will. This explains the unusual accompaniment for two pianos and harmonium, i.e., reed organ. In our performance, the piano parts have been reduced to one player and the pipe organ will be used in place of the harmonium, both of these changes being the modern norm for presenting this work, although Rossini did compose an orchestral accompaniment four years later.

Rossini jokingly referred to the Petite Messe Solennelle as “the last mortal sin of my old age.” This frivolous notion is countered by the inscription that he included in the score: “Dear God - this poor little mass lies there. Have I written some music that is sacred, or just some sacred music? I was born to write opera buffa, well Thou knowest! Scant learning is there contained, but a little of my full heart is there. Then be Thou praised, and grant me entry into Paradise.”

The word petite in the title is misleading as this is a major work lasting well over an hour, and many of the choruses are indeed learned, especially the monumental amen fugues which conclude the Gloria in excelsis and the Credo.

John Weaver will conduct the performance and Peter Vinograde will be the pianist. The soloists will be Sarah Pillow, soprano; Desirée Baxter, alto; Forbes Woods, tenor; and Daniel Alexander, bass. The suggested donation at the door is $15 (Seniors and Students $10).
