Dr. George Conway to Speak at MAPC on October 20

Discover the Spiritual Journey of Parenthood
Helping Your Child Grow Spiritually

How do we give children a spiritual inheritance so that, in a world of rampant consumerism, they grow into young people who are concerned about people less fortunate than they? How do we teach children so that in a world of violence and self-destruction, they choose life; in a world of cynicism, they see God; in a world in which they are told "everyone lies," they hold fast to God's truth?

The Rev. Dr. George E. Conway

The Rev. Dr. George E. Conway addresses these questions and more with his book "Giving Good Gifts: The Spiritual Journey of Parenthood." Learn the seven spiritual gifts we can give our children - gifts that will help them form a healthy spiritual identity. Learn how we can grow with our children and understand parenting as a spiritual journey, drawing closer to God, to our children, and to the best parts of ourselves.

Dr. Conway will speak on Sunday, October 20, during the 10 am Christian Education hour, preach during the services, and also lead a three-hour parents' retreat in the afternoon.

The Rev. Dr. George E. Conway is an ordained Presbyterian minister who has spent his professional life as a teacher, counselor, chaplain, coach and administrator in independent schools. He began his teaching career at Princeton Day School in 1971; following his ordination he became chaplain at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut. He went to Virginia in 1976 to become the director of counseling at Woodberry Forest School where he also served as school minister. In 1979 he became Director of Admissions at Woodberry. Since 1982, he has been headmaster of St. Anne's-Belfield School, a co-educational college preparatory school in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he lives with his wife and daughter.

He is the past president of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and the Council for Religion in Independent Schools. He is a member of the Virginia Bar Association Committee on Issues of State and National Importance, and he has served the Governor of Virginia on the Champion Schools Commission and as chair of the State Board of Education Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure. In 1987, he was selected to brief President Bush prior to the first education summit.

Dr. Conway holds degrees from Wilkes College, Princeton Theological Seminary and Boston University. He has written for professional journals on school size and school choice and has spoken widely on moral issues in schools. His book, Giving Good Gifts: The Spiritual Journey of Parenthood, was published in January, 2002.

It will meet over these two Sundays in the Phillips Lounge, starting around 12:45 pm (after the 11:15am worship service), and concluding around 4:30 pm both weeks. Lunch will be provided. Seniors' Ministries

Poetry and Prayer
November 4, 2002, 3 - 4:30 pm

In their book Primary Speech, Ann and Barry Ulanov write, "People pray, whether or not they call it prayer. We pray every time we ask for help, understanding, or strength, in or out of religion." Among the practitioners of the art of prayer from Biblical times to the present have been some of the most renowned poets in history. In this session we will look at how some poets over the ages have used their art to express prayers and direct addresses to God. Some of those we will explore will be John Donne, George Herbert, T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, John Berryman, Denise Levertov, and Louise Gluck.

Leader David Robb is a psychotherapist, pastoral counselor and educator who practices in Manhattan. An ordained minister of the United Church of Christ and an Associate of Kenwood Psychological Services, he formerly taught courses in religion at Georgetown University and Connecticut College. He currently directs the adult education program at the Unitarian Church of All Souls in Manhattan.

Please let Margaret Williamson know if you and any guests will be attending, so that we may have plenty of coffee and cookies. You can reach Margaret at 212/288-8920, ext. 271.

Outreach in Action

This text is from a Word in Action delivered by Danielle Lopez
in the worship Services on September 22, 2002.

My name is Danny and today I wanted to share with you some of my experiences with one of MAPC's outreach programs called LEAP, the Learning Enrichment and Activities Program. I must confess that when I started I really had no idea what the program was about. I honestly thought it was two hours of strictly reading and I wondered how they were convincing kids to give up cartoons for books. What I found out was that it was nothing like what I had imagined.

This wasn't school and there were no lesson plans. It was fun and the kids were great. It's just you and a child reading whatever interests them. That might mean that this week it's poetry because that's what Virginia likes and next week it's Curious George because that's what Danny likes. Sometimes it might be a group taking parts and reading a play. But that was only for the first hour. In the second hour it's all about being creative; so we're talking about painting, drawing, making cards. I've found that the kids can be very creative and those who may not feel comfortable with reading yet find this part of the day very enjoyable. Oh, and I can't forget to mention a couple of my favorite events from last year, story-telling by Margaret Dawson and the sing-a-long with Karen Luxton Gourgey. Those days were like a flash from the past and I know that the kids enjoyed them just from their expressions alone.

Well, I hope that you now have a better idea of what we do at LEAP, and if you would like to join us in East Harlem on Saturday mornings between 10 am and 12 pm, please contact Dawn Ravella at the church for further details.
Thank you.
