MAPC UPDATE

Vol. XXVIII, No. 14

September 15, 2002

Homecoming is Here!

Don't miss the Homecoming Sunday Luncheon at 12:45 pm in the Parish Hall this Sunday, September 15; it promises to be an exciting new way to begin our program year! We will continue our annual tradition of recognizing and celebrating our 50+-year members, but we will be adding a "Town Hall Meeting" to the program. This meeting will include several brief presentations on some of the new and recent developments in MAPC's life. Topics such as new outreach opportunities, the development of a small groups ministry, and, of course, the arrival of our new Associate Pastor for Congregational Life, Beverly Bartlett, will be addressed. The program will end around 2 pm.

So, plan to attend this interesting and informative event. Reservations for lunch are not required, but indicating your intention to attend would help in our planning. Call Mary Walling at the church at (212) 288-8920, ext. 241 if you would like to attend.

Update on Dr. Evans' Retirement Celebrations

This is a reminder that we will recognize John Evans' outstanding ministry with us as our Interim Associate Pastor after the 11:15 am service on September 29. Please make plans to attend and thank John for the excellent service he has given our congregation during this time of transition. It will be a time of great celebration, humor and fun.

For those of you who wish to make a tangible gift of thanks to John, the church is collecting a purse which it will pass on to John. Contributions should be designated to the "Evans Purse" when they are made. In answer to some of your questions on this matter, our research and the advice we have been given indicates that such contributions are NOT tax-deductible.

The Board of Deacons

Old ways and ideas are often slow to change. Several years ago, the role of the deacons was to call on the sick, infirm elderly and those homebound or in nursing homes. This was and remains an important ministry with our congregation. Many Presbyterian churches have taken the Book of Order seriously and have every member of the congregation (young and old adults) assigned to a deacon. In a busy impersonal city it is of great value to have a community of faith where there is a sense of communion and belonging as part of God's family. Our deacons have been working toward this direction for two years, and it is taking time. As we expand, we ask that you welcome having a deacon. There will be somebody there who will remember a birthday or other significant times in your life, and someone who will assist the pastoral staff in calling at times of sickness and sorrow, as well as joyous times. This year our deacons are increasing contacts with young people who are away at school or university, families where there is a new birth, and newer members who have not yet found avenues for growth and fellowship within our faith community.

It does not mean that you are very old or sick when a deacon contacts you. We are trying to expand a beautiful part of our ministry.

A Path to the Library

Homecoming - An oh-so-true event for the Hood Library, for September 15 marks the re-opening of the Library. The hope is that each and everyone who borrowed books for the summer will return them promptly on that date. More than 100 books were checked out. Will you beat a path to the Library? The fee for returning books late is 50¢ per week.

Good news for home comers is that quite a few new books are ready for curious or hungry bookbodies. Librarians look forward to welcoming you even if you just stop by to browse.
