Please plan to attend the Church Ministry Fair on Homecoming Sunday, September 14 following the 11:15 am worship service. In lieu of our regular hospitality time in the church house lobby, we will have a light lunch and ministry fair in the Parish Hall.
Come catch up with friends you haven’t seen all summer, make some new friends, and learn about the wide variety of ministries and programs MAPC offers–opportunities for fellowship, study, and service.
On
Sunday, September 21 at 6 pm there will be a memorial service for Elizabeth
Pruett in the sanctuary. Many of Peggy’s singer friends will be joining
with our choir and chorale as we thank God for her life and remember her
for the wonderful musical gifts she shared with this church over many years.
Peggy died on July 30 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Several
members of our choir were her principal care givers during her final illness.
Indeed, Peggy regarded our choir as her real family in New York.
Peggy Pruett was born in Natchez, MS and received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School. Her operatic credits include a triumphant European debut at the Theatre du Chatelat in Paris followed by performances as soloist with the orchestra I Solisti Veneti in Portugal. She performed in various roles at Glyndebourne, the Paris Opera, the Opera de Lyon, the Metropolitan Opera Touring Company and the opera companies of Zurich and Lausanne.
As an acclaimed concert soloist, Peggy appeared with the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble at Caramoor, the Metropolitan Museum, St. John the Divine, the Carmel, CA Bach Festival, the London Choral Arts Society, Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society, the New York Choral Society and several performances with the Craftsbury Chamber Players in Vermont.
Peggy has been a member of the professional octet at MAPC almost continuously since September of 1985 giving us consistently beautiful performances in our services and in St. Andrew concerts. Many will always remain etched in our memories, but especially her singing of the “Pie Jesu” aria from the Faure Requiem, the solo part in the Mozart “Laudate Dominum” and her annual thrilling rendition of the spiritual, “Were You There” at the Tenebrae Service on Good Friday. These will all be included in the service on September 21.

Interested in learning more about the Christian faith in general, the Presbyterian
Church, or MAPC in particular? Have you been thinking about making MAPC
your church home?
These are all good reasons for attending our next Inquirers Seminar on Saturday,
October 4, when we will address all those questions and more. We will begin
gathering at 8:30 am for coffee and breakfast in the Phillips Lounge next
to Dana Chapel in the Church House. The Seminar itself begins promptly at
9 am and concludes around 4 pm. Dress is casual, and lunch will be provided.
Professional child care is available but needs to be arranged in advance
by calling Mary Walling at the church office (288-8920, x241). If you have
questions or concerns in general, please call the Rev. J.C. Austin at the
church office (288-8920, x242). He will be pleased to speak with you about
the seminars or other questions you might have about membership or the church.

In our first Seniors’ Ministries gathering this fall, we will listen
to a reading of Barbara Kingsolver’s essay “Knowing Our Place”
from her collection entitled Small Wonder. We’ll have an opportunity
to respond to her essay by sharing in a discussion about the significance
of certain places in our lives. Ms. Kingsolver stresses the importance of
“wild places”–what is the role and importance of wild
places for those of us who live in the city?
Following our discussion there will be time for fellowship and refreshments.
Bring a friend and a memory of a special place to share. RSVP to Margaret
Williamson at (212) 288-8920, ext. 271 or e-mail her at mew@mapc.com
