Our 2003 Annual Stewardship Campaign is closing in on its goal; currently,
we have $855,000 in pledges, only $55,000 away from our goal of $910,000.
Thanks again to all those who have pledged so generously and faithfully
to support MAPC’s mission in 2003. If you have not yet made a pledge,
it’s not too late to make one! The Session has plotted out an ambitious
vision for our ministry this year; your pledge is vital for us to fully
realize that vision. If you need a pledge card, you can contact Mary Walling
at the Church Office at (212) 288-8920, ext. 24 and she will promptly send
you one. Alternatively, you can make your pledge via e-mail by simply sending
it to J.C. Austin at jca@mapc.com.

The tenth Annual Evening of Readings and Music will be held on Wednesday,
May 21,
2003,
and you are invited. The Hood Library Committee, which sponsors the event,
promises an enjoyable program, one that will whet your appetite for more
frequent visits to the library.
All readings have been chosen from the library’s recent acquisitions.
You will find the readings befit this year’s theme, Humor &
Wisdom, All readers are MAPC’ers. They are J.C. Austin, Moderator,
Fred R. Anderson, Beverly A. Bartlett, Joyce Evans, Clare Davis, Margaret
Dawson, Julian Schroeder, William Patterson and John Weaver.
“We must laugh and we must sing. We are blest with everything,”
writes the poet William Butler Yeats. And we will do some of both on May
21. Nuggets of wisdom will also be found among the five-minute readings.
To give you a wee idea of the kind of lines you will hear and read, here
are a few: “Three children by another’s wife.” “By
nightfall the whole town knew.” “Do you engage in puzzler?”
“It was the double-barrel, ninety-proof, knock-down, render-the-victim-unconscious,
moose-killing variety.” “He’s an unabashed patriot.”
The whole evening will offer a time of fellowship. Reception at 6 pm in
the Church House Lobby, dinner at 6:30 pm in the Parish Hall, program
at 7:30 pm.
Bring dinner, a blanket, a folding chair–whatever
you need to be comfortable in the park!
Meet at Cedar Hill in Central Park (the sledding hill in Winter) near
the 79th Street entrance on the East Side.
Beverages will be provided.
This National Historic Landmark District was a 39,683 acre Royal Patent
granted to the French refugees on May 26, 1677. The stone French church
and houses were built between 1692 and 1890 and furnished to reflect
their multi-generational family ownership. Huguenot Street is said to
be the oldest street in America. Lunch will be a buffet at the Williams
Lake Resort.
You won’t want to miss this trip! The bus will leave PROMPTLY
at 9 a.m., and we expect to be back at the church around 5 pm.
Please make your reservations as soon as possible, since this trip will
fill up quickly. We will have one bus only. Also, telephone reservations
will not be accepted, only reservation forms accompanied by a check
for $25 (which covers the cost of the bus charter, admission fee and
lunch.) made payable to Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church (no money
orders; cash is accepted).
Since we have only one bus, which seats 55, we request that, if you
are planning to ask a guest, you please ask only one. We want as many
of you as possible to enjoy this wonderful trip. The historic houses
were built on uneven terrain, so please wear comfortable shoes with
non-skid soles.
Interested in learning more about the Christian faith in general, the
Presbyterian Church, or MAPC in particular? Have you been thinking about
making MAPC your church home?
We will address all these questions and more at the next Inquirers Seminar,
so plan on joining in! It will meet over these two Sundays on the 5th
Floor, starting around noon (after the 10:30 am worship service) and concluding
around 3:30 pm both weeks. Lunch will be provided. It is a unified seminar
broken out over two weeks, so plan to attend both sessions. Child care
is available but needs to be arranged in advance by calling Mary Walling
at the church office (288-8920, x241). If you have questions or concerns
in general, please call J.C. Austin at the church office (288-8920, x242).
He will be pleased to speak with you about the seminars or other questions
you might have about membership or the church. (e-mail:
jca@mapc.com)
