E-mail Newsletter Replaces Weekly UPDATE

Early in December the pastors began an experiment with Internet technology, sending weekly announcements to those on the church’s e-mail address list. The pastors’ announcements were both so popular and timely that they have continued. Aware that not all of our members have access to the Internet, a telephone extension has been dedicated to making those same announcements orally. You can call the church at 212-288-8920 x237 after 5 pm on Fridays to hear a spoken recording of the announcements that appear in the e-mail message.

At the same time the Session Budget Committee was wrestling with ways in which to reduce administrative expenses. Two years earlier a $10,000 reduction was achieved in moving UPDATE from a weekly to bi-weekly publication during the program year, and monthly during the summer months. On the strength of the e-mail and voice-mail experience, the pastors have recommended reducing UPDATE publication to a monthly schedule effective January 1, 2004. This has produced another $6,000 savings in the 2004 Budget.

UPDATE will now be published on the third Sunday of each month. It will no longer contain a calendar of weekly events, as those will be available in the bulletin insert on Sundays, and major events will continue to be announced on a weekly basis in both the pastors’ e-mail and the telephone recorded announcements.

That’s the Sunday morning when the Hood Library Committee will celebrate Library Awareness Sunday in the Church House Lobby. Loads of books, all kinds, will have been moved from library shelves to display tables. Yes, there will be time to browse and to select your choice book. A Hood librarian will quickly check out the book for you.

Thank You, Darrell

After almost three years Darrell Harris is stepping down as Head Usher. The Evangelism Committee would like to thank Darrell for being present with a warm smile and a helping hand to greet newcomers and long time members alike. Darrell has truly shown us how to welcome people into the transforming presence of Jesus Christ.

As we say goodbye to Darrell, we welcome Jack Hobson as the new head usher. Jack and his wife Nancy and daughter Martha joined MAPC in 2003, and all have become active members in the life of the Church.

Jack is looking for persons willing to usher at least one Sunday a month. Ushering is a very important ministry within MAPC. For some newcomers the usher/greeter is the first person they meet at MAPC. Ushering is about more than simply handing out bulletins and taking up the offering. It is one of the ways that we show people who we are and help to welcome them into our community.

If you are looking for a ministry at MAPC please consider becoming an usher. You can talk to Jack Hobson, Sharon Davison or J.C. Austin if you have questions about ushering.

Again we want to thank Darrell for his years of service and look forward to working with him in the future and seeing him around MAPC.

–The Evangelism Committee
