The Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church (MAPC) Day School was founded as an extension of the church’s educational mission and community outreach. It continues to be an integral part of Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, serving families within and beyond the Church’s membership. The MAPC Day School provides a developmentally appropriate nursery-kindergarten program designed to enhance each individual child’s spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth. The school seeks to provide its educational opportunities to an ethnically, economically and religiously diverse community.
The MAPC Day School is a learning environment that respects and nurtures the different gifts and learning styles each child brings to the group. The children’s interests are an integral part of curriculum planning. Active, expressive, child-centered learning experiences are emphasized. Recognizing that play is the work of children, manipulative materials such as sand, water, clay, paint and blocks are provided. Explorations with concrete materials encourage children to think, to plan, to re-create and thereby to make sense of the world. Professionally qualified teachers develop programs rich in language, reading, math, art and music to encourage in each child a love of learning, curiosity, creativity, self confidence and independence as a learner.
As part of our Presbyterian heritage, Christian holidays are celebrated at school. The sharing of other religious and cultural traditions, such as Passover and Lunar New Year, both reflects the diversity of our families and is a model for the respectful comparison of differing practices.
The school’s classrooms, library, movement and music room, and enclosed, all-weather roofed play area are located in the Parish House.
An active parent body supports the work of the school through a variety of social and fund raising events as well as through representation on the MAPC Day School Committee that formulates school policy. Families are encouraged to join in the celebration of special events, holidays and the ordinary life of the classroom.
Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church Day School is an integral part of the ministry of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church. The full cost of operating the school is not reflected in charges to parents. As a program of MAPC, the church shares some costs of the school.
Each year the operating budget of the school reflects the assumption that some families will require financial aid. Fund raising events by the parent body and contributions from friends of the school provide a limited amount of financial aid each year. All families are expected to participate in fund raising activities on behalf of the school.
Donations to existing funds and the establishment of new ones are always welcome and are essential for the development and growth of the school. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.
Children who will be two years and nine months old through kindergarten age (by the September they are to begin attending school) are eligible for admission. The application process includes an evening Open House and a small group Parents’ Tour. Children may subsequently be invited to a small group play session. They are not tested or expected to separate from parents during their visit. Children are expected to be toilet-trained before beginning school.
The Day School is a member of the Independent School Admissions Association of Greater New York and abides by its admission policies and dates.
Requests for Applications are accepted beginning in the week before Labor Day one year prior to the Fall of anticipated enrollment. It is not necessary to call on the day after Labor Day.
The Madison Avenue Presbyterian Day School gives preference to the following children whose applications have been completed prior to December 1 of the year preceding admission and whose parents have chosen the Early Decision/Early Acceptance option:
The School does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, national or ethnic origin in admission or educational policies or in its financial aid program.
Morning Program: Children enrolled in the Morning Program attend five days per week. Mondays through Thursdays, children are at school from 8:30 am to 12:45 pm, including time to eat lunch (brought from home) in their classrooms. On Fridays, the school day starts at 8:30 am and ends at 12:00 noon. The children do not eat lunch at school on Fridays.
In addition, families in the Morning Program may elect to participate in optional Extended Days offered on Mondays through Thursdays from 12:45 pm to 2:45 pm. During an Extended Day, children continue activities in their classroom with their teachers, but with no more than half of their classmates. Families may chose to participate in Extended Day all four days each week, or select any one, two or three days that fit their schedules. Extended Day is not offered on Fridays.
Afternoon Program: Children enrolled in the Afternoon Program attend four days per week, Mondays through Thursdays from 12:00 to 3:00, including time to eat lunch (brought from home) in their classrooms. The Afternoon Program is focused on younger children who benefit from attending fewer hours per week. For the 2010-2011 school year, children with birth dates in June 2007 through December 2007 will be eligible for the Afternoon Program.
To accommodate Day School and MAPC families with children under 2 years and 9 months old, the Day School offers a pre-nursery program, Twos on Four. A teacher and parent supported playtime, Twos on Four meets two or three mornings a week and is a developmentally appropriate bridge to the Day School. This program is limited to those afforded admissions preference for the Day School: children of eligible church members and siblings of current Day School families. This limitation ensures that there will also be places for new families in the Day School in addition to those who start in the pre-nursery program.
