Millie is thrilled to join the staff of MAPC and return to her native New York City. A self-professed nerd, Millie attended Stuyvesant High School, and later received joint Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in Linguistics from the University of Chicago. Her passion for the church and ministry led her to Princeton Theological Seminary, where she recently graduated with a Master of Divinity degree. At Princeton, Millie was able to indulge in her love of languages and Old Testament studies, but her true calling was equipping herself for the discipleship, teaching and training of lay church leadership.
Millie brings diverse church and teaching experiences to the position of Director of Christian Education. She was raised in the Presbyterian Church, and has served both established and newly planted congregations in various denominations in Chicago, Princeton, and New York. Her experience has brought her into contact with the Emergent Church movement, which seeks to discover ways of connecting the language and experience of faith to a postmodern world.
As the Director, Millie hopes to spend this year strengthening the infrastructure of a Christian Education program serving children, youth and adults of all ages. This would involve organizing recruitment and training procedures, reviewing childcare and educational policies, and updating and maintaining communications (including both publicity and feedback on programs). Millie will also work with the Christian Education Committee to evaluate the current curriculum and programs, particularly Children’s Worship, Church School, Kids’ Club, and the Adult Education hour. Her ultimate goal is to open up places where our members can learn to discuss their faith, receive instruction and encouragement for their own discipleship, and discover ways to contribute to the mission of the church.
Millie would love to get to know as many members as possible to receive their input on this process. If you have any insights, encouragement, thoughts or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out to her. She is best reached by e-mail, mat@mapc.com, or you can call her at the church office at 212-288-8920 x235.
Millie lives on the tenth floor of the Church House with her two cats, Comet and Sophie, keeping vacuum cleaner and lint roller makers in business. A food enthusiast, Millie loves to cook, discover new places to eat, and discuss food politics. She also loves reading, theater, travel, and walking around the city with friends.
