Andrew Elliot Henderson became the Director of Music & Organist at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in July 2005. In addition to his duties at MAPC, he is an adjunct Assistant Professor of Organ at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey he teaches graduate courses in organ literature, and he is currently the organ instructor at Teacher’s College, Columbia University.
Dr. Henderson, a native of Thorold, Ontario, holds degrees in music from Cambridge University in England, Yale University and The Juilliard School. While at Cambridge he held the position of Organ Scholar at Clare College, Cambridge, where – in addition to playing and conducting numerous choral services during term – he participated in BBC broadcasts, recordings and tours throughout Europe and North America with Clare College Choir. At Yale he completed his graduate studies in organ performance on a full scholarship from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, where he was Marquand Chapel Organist at the Yale Divinity School and the recipient of prizes in organ performance and academic studies. He was a C.V. Starr doctoral fellow at The Juilliard School and earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in May 2007, winning the Richard F. French Prize for the best doctoral dissertation. From 2001 to 2005 he was the Assistant Organist at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, New York, where he was actively involved in the renowned liturgical and concert programs.
In August 2002 Andrew was one of four candidates chosen to compete in the final round of the international organ competition Grand Prix de Chartres held in Chartres Cathedral, France. In 2003 he won first prize in the biennial National Organ Playing Competition sponsored by the Royal Canadian College of Organists. As well as performing recitals in St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, London, and at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., he was a featured performer at the Royal Canadian College of Organists’ National Convention in Winnipeg in July 2004. Andrew has earned the Fellowship diploma of the Royal Canadian College of Organists and is an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto. His teachers have included John Tuttle, Barrie Cabena, David Sanger, Thomas Murray and John Weaver.
Andrew is married to Mary Wannamaker Huff, Associate Director of Music at MAPC and the Director of Children’s Choirs at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, where she administers a music ministry incorporating 100 children in a graded choral program. They have two young sons: Elliot (born 2005) and Christian (born 2007).
