The Rev. John Charles "J.C."Austin

Associate Pastor for Evangelism and Stewardship

J.C. Austin came to Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in 1999 and serves as Associate Pastor for Evangelism and Stewardship. J.C. grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and is a 1993 graduate of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, with a Bachelor of Arts in English (cum laude). In 1998, he earned a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and received six major awards and prizes during his time there, including the prestigious Graduate Study Fellowship for the Parish Pulpit Ministry. That fellowship enabled him to spend a year in South Africa studying the public roles of the churches in the apartheid struggle and the reconciliation process. J.C. has maintained his ties with South Africa and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Cape Town in the field of Christian Ethics and Public Life.

J.C. has been an active member of the Presbytery of New York City. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, he was a Commissioner on the Presbytery’s September 11 Disaster Relief Administrative Commission and chaired its Finance and Grants Committee, which managed over $1 million in donations. More recently, he has chaired the Presbytery’s General Council and served on both its Mission Statement Design Team and Strategic Planning Group. Currently, he serves on its Personnel Committee. He is also a member of the Steering Committee for the New York City Presbyterian-Jewish Dialogue Program and of the Board of Directors of the Presbyterian Endowment Education and Resource Network (PEER).

In his spare time, J.C. is a passionate follower of baseball, though his playing time is now restricted to the MAPC Co-ed Softball Team. He listens to a variety of musical genres and plays guitar. He also enjoys a broad range of movies and is a voracious reader. On vacation, he and Tammy continue to pursue the unique experiences and adventure of independent travel. Tammy and J.C. are the proud parents of a son, Liam, who was born in March 2005.
