Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Summer Schedule

Summer Choir Rehearsal – Choir Room – 9:30 am

Morning Worship at 10:30 am; Evening at 7:30 pm
Infant Nursery – 4th Floor Phillips Building, 8:45 am – 12:15 pm
Toddler Nursery – 4th Floor Church House, 8:45 am – 12:15 pm

Worship at 10:30 am and 7:30 pm: the Rev. Brent A. Raska will be preaching; his sermon entitled “A Ministry of Humility” is based upon the texts: 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10; Psalm 48; 2 Corinthians 12:2-10; and Mark 6:1-13.

Children’s Worship at 10:45 am: Following the Lesson for Young Christians, the children 3-8 are invited to go with Millie Shin and her support teachers, to Children’s Bible Study in the Phillips Lounge. They return to their parents during the singing of the Doxology, so that they may participate in the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. When there is a baptism, the children return earlier than the Doxology in order to be a part of the baptism. Millie would be glad to have parents join their children if they are interested in seeing what takes place in this important program.

Lectionary Bible Study at 9:15 am with the Rev. Erin R. Raska in the Dana Chapel

MAPC Co-Ed Softball: no game due to holiday weekend.

Monthly Special Offering for Shelter Dinner

MAPC will take our monthly food offering this Sunday, July 5, to support MAPC's Shelter Dinner for persons who are homeless or on limited income. Special yellow envelopes marked “MAPC Food Programs” will be included in Sunday’s worship bulletin. The offering supports the rising food costs that MAPC is experiencing. The MAPC Shelter Dinner continues to see increased numbers, and our congregation remains in need of support to offset our budget for food programs. The MAPC Shelter Dinner is an essential program that serves needy guests on Thursday evenings and works in collaboration with other neighborhood congregations that serve meals on the other remaining nights. Please support this critical MAPC Outreach program!

Future Events and Other Concerns

Mid-Timer’s (And Any-Other-Timers!) Philharmonic Concert,
“Music Under the Stars,” Thursday, July 16 at 8 pm

Join MAPC members and friends for a picnic/concert featuring the New York Philharmonic. Instead of Central Park, this year we are trying a more relaxed venue–in Bronx's Van Cortlandt Park. On the program are Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, Jupiter; and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.

Take the 1 train to the final stop–242nd St/Van Cortlandt Park and then walk a half a block to Manhattan College Parkway to the park side where the comfort station is. Plan on meeting MAPC members (look for Vicki Schmelzer) at 6:45 pm, and at 7 pm we will do the short walk to the concert area (about a block).

The Bronx concert is far less crowded than Central Park and this is a great opportunity to actually hear the Philharmonic and see the fireworks without much fanfare. Bring a picnic supper and a friend! We will have a few blankets to sit on, and please feel free to bring a beach/sand chair. Unless you are unable to sit on the ground, please don’t bring a higher folding chair, as they block the view for others. Please let us know you’re coming so we know whom to look for and how large a space to claim. RSVP to Soraida Maldonado at 212-288-8920 x271, or via e-mail to sam@mapc.com.

Dr. Anderson Preaching at the Dune Church on July 5, Southampton, Long Island

As he has done on occasion in other summers, Dr. Anderson will be preaching on Sunday, July 5 at the Dune Church in Southampton at 11 am. As always, he would greatly enjoy seeing any MAPC members who are summering nearby. He returns to the office on Tuesday, July 7. July 12 will be his last Sunday in the pulpit until September.

Come and Sing with the Choir on Sunday Mornings this Summer

You’re invited to sing on Sundays during the summer at MAPC! Our Summer Choir provides an opportunity for church members and friends to sing some beautiful choral music together as leaders of worship. Continuing through Labor Day weekend, the Summer Choir will meet on Sunday mornings for a rehearsal at 9:30 am in preparation for our 10:30 am services. This is a great way to join in on the music-making at MAPC on an informal level; just come as you can! For more information and to peruse the choral music list, please see the information sheet that may be found in the Narthex or click on this link to the church’s website: Summer_Choral_Music_2009.pdf, or contact Andrew Henderson at aeh@mapc.com.

Families with Young Children, Summer Gathering, July 18

Several families have asked if we can have a Families with Young Children gathering in the summer, so we’ve put one on our calendar! If you’re in town over the summer, please put it on yours as well! Saturday, July 18, from 10 am to noon families with children ages 5 and under are invited to come play on the Roof Garden. Older siblings are welcome, too. We’ll have the wading pools and sprinkler set up for water play, and the usual coffee, tea, juice, bagels and fruit for breakfast or a morning snack. RSVP to Soraida Maldonado at the church offices, sam@mapc.com or 212-288-8920 x271.

Summer Orientation on Homelessness and MAPC’s Shelter Ministry, Sunday, July 12

A presentation and orientation will be offered by Douglas Grace, Interim Outreach Ministry Coordinator, Sunday, July 12, that explores the NYC Homelessness crisis and MAPC’s various shelter ministries. (These presentations are normally held on the first Sunday of the month.) The presentation will begin at noon in the MAPC Overnight Shelter with a light lunch–we promise to finish the session by 1:30 pm! This is a great opportunity for those interested in participating in MAPC’s Overnight Shelter Ministry and Shelter Dinner Ministry to learn about the issues of hunger and homelessness in NYC and the ministry potential through our congregation’s outreach program. We plan to reopen the MAPC Overnight Shelter on Monday, July 13 in our new six-night per week model in partnership with Urban Pathways’ drop-in center. Please consider helping our congregation expand our ministry to our NYC neighbors who happen to be currently homeless.

MAPC Co-ed Softball–“Batter Up!”

The MAPC Softball team is in the middle of its 7th season and everyone (above the age of 13–league rule) is welcome to play, no matter how little experience you have or how few games you can make! The team plays on Sundays in late afternoon through late August. If you are interested in playing or learning more, please contact Stephanie Nichols (sprnichols@hotmail.com). Our next game is Sunday, July 12, playing West Park Presbyterian Church on North Meadow Field #1 at 5:30 pm; players–please arrive by 5 pm. See you on the field! Spectators are very welcome.

Thank You for Filling the Yorkville
Common Pantry Grocery Carts

The Yorkville Common Pantry remains in need of canned food, as well as daily staples. You can drop items off in the grocery carts in the Church House Lobby or the Sanctuary Narthex, or you could even make an order through one of your grocers and have it delivered. (8 East 109th Street, New York, NY, 10029, Phone: 917-720-9700) YCP can always use assistance to help pack food for distribution on Saturday mornings and at certain other times each week. For details, please call YCP at 917-720-9710 and speak with Gladys at x110. Thanks everyone!

Homeless Clothing Donations Needed

Since our Neighborhood Center for Homeless People was closed last summer, the Homeless Outreach Program at Jan Hus Presbyterian Church has seen a dramatic increase of homeless persons seeking assistance. Significant areas of need include clothing for children of struggling families, and for professional women’s and men’s clothing for people who are seeking employment. If you have clothing items in appropriate condition, we encourage you to take them to the Jan Hus Clothes Pantry at 74th Street and 1st Avenue, or leave them in the MAPC coat room off of the Church House Lobby. (Please inform the receptionist that you have left a clothing donation.) Please note that this is NOT an opportunity to simply “clean closets” of unwanted rummage, but appropriate clothing donations are quite welcomed.

Daily Prayer

Daily Prayer is in recess for the summer, though the Pastors continue to pray daily for those on the prayer list.
