Children’s Worship at 9 and 11:15 am. Following the Lesson for Young Christians, the children 3-8 are invited to go with Millie Shin and her support teachers, to Children’s Bible Study in the Phillips Lounge. When there is a baptism, the children return earlier than the Doxology in order to be a part of the baptism. Millie Shin, who supervises this program, would be glad to have parents join their children if they are interested in seeing what takes place in this important program.

Future Events and Other Concerns

Patricia Gilbert Read Memorial Service, October 14, 6 pm

The memorial service for Pat Read is scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, at 6 pm in the Sanctuary. There will be a reception in the Parish Hall following the service. Pat was the wife of the Rev. Dr. David H.C. Read, Pastor of MAPC from 1955 through 1989, and Pastor Emeritus from 1989 until his death in 2001. Several years thereafter, Pat moved to Portland, Oregon, to be near their son Rory. Pat died June 14 of this year.

John Weaver Honored by Union Theological Seminary, October 17

Dr. John Weaver, MAPC’s Director of Music and Organist Emeritus, has been selected to be the recipient of Union Theological Seminary’s prestigious Unitas Award, given to an alumni/ae of the school who has distinguished him or herself and the school through contributions to the life of faith and the church. John received the Master of Sacred Music degree from Union in 1968.

John will play for Chapel that day at 12:15. The award will be presented in James Chapel later that afternoon at 4 pm. A banquet will follow the celebration at 6 pm. Reservations and tickets ($60), for the banquet can be obtained by calling Union Theological Seminary at 212-662-7100.

Peer-Led Bible Study

For those interested in small group Bible study, we are continuing last year's class in the Basement Shelter at 10 am on Sundays. We have a nucleus of 5 or 6 regulars, and visitors are always welcome. Our study this fall is focused on the Gospel according to Luke. The atmosphere of the group encourages everyone to share their thoughts–which typically generate some lively discussion. All interested should contact Jeff Armstrong through the church.

20s/30s and New York Cares Day, Saturday, October 18

The 20s/30s group would like to invite MAPC members and friends over the age of 12 to join their New York Cares Day team. New York Cares is an organization that provides service opportunities to New Yorkers interested in helping their community. New York Cares Day is dedicated to beautifying community schools and will take place this year on Saturday, October 18. Please contact Megan Wiltfong at mapc.20s30s@gmail.com for information on how to register. This is a great opportunity to serve our NYC community and to enjoy fellowship as we work together.

Saint Andrew Music Society: October 19

MAYA–an exciting and innovative ensemble of harp, flute and percussion–will present next Sunday’s concert on our Music on Madison series. On October 19 at 3 pm, John Hadfield, percussion, Jacqueline Kerrod, harp, and Sato Moughalian, flute, will perform music ranging from Bach and Tchaikovsky to traditional Hungarian Romani music to newly-composed works (including a New York premiere)! Formed in 2005, MAYA’s uniquely compelling and rhythmically-driven performances seek to present a repertoire which mirrors their expanding ideals of beauty in an increasingly connected world. Their performances have been called “dazzling” by Next magazine, and their first CD was released last year to glowing reviews. For more information about next Sunday’s program, please click on: http://www.mapc.com/html/06_life/SAMS-2008-10-19-MAYA-WebRelease.pdf. Admission to SAMS concerts is by suggested donation at the door: $15 ($10 – students/seniors); children 12 and under are admitted free!

An Orientation on Homelessness and MAPC’s Shelter Ministry, October 19

A presentation and orientation will be offered on the third Sunday of the month that explores the NYC Homelessness crisis and MAPC’s various shelter ministries. The presentation will begin at 1 pm in the MAPC Overnight Shelter with a light lunch. This is a great opportunity for those interested in participating in MAPC’s Overnight Shelter Ministry and Shelter Dinner Ministry to learn about the issues of hunger and homelessness in NYC and the ministry potential through our congregation’s outreach programs.

Families with Young Children, October 18

The next Families with Young Children gathering will be Saturday, October 18. We’ll meet from 10 am to noon on the Roof Garden, or on the 5th Floor if it is too cold. Children are invited to wear their Halloween costumes, and we’ll have special treats that day. If you have children ages 5 and under, please come join in this time of play and fellowship. Older siblings are welcome, too! We’ll have coffee, tea, juice, bagels, fruit, conversation and fun. This is a wonderful way to get to know other families in the church! It’s helpful to know you’re coming so we can plan for enough food–but we welcome last minute additions as well! RSVP to Soraida Maldonado at the church offices, sam@mapc.com, or 212-288-8920 x271.

And–so you can mark your calendars now–the Families gatherings for the remainder of the calendar year are November 8 and December 13.

What Are We “Doing” in Zimbabwe?
Come Find Out on October 19 and 26 at 10 am!

After a wonderful presentation to more than 80 people last Sunday, MAPC’s African Partnership Exploration Team will continue their discussion of partnering with the churches of the Synod of Harare in Zimbabwe during our regular Adult Education hour on October 19 and 26.

The adult education series will delve deeper into the question of what we will “do” in a prospective partnership with the Synod of Harare. The first week will be an in-depth exploration of the concept of partnership: why that is the preferred relationship by the Presbyterian Church (USA); what it involves in terms of responsibilities, activities, and tangible results; and how it differs from a more project-based approach. If you are asking yourself, “these trips have sounded great, but what are we going to do about it?” then you do not want to miss this class! Picking up on this conversation, the second week will look more specifically at what we believe that MAPC and the Synod of Harare can each give and receive through this partnership and how we can strengthen each other in our own contexts, and lay out what the Team sees as the next steps in this unfolding ministry.

Please make a special effort to attend this important class; we believe that this potential partnership will be one of the most important and influential initiatives that this congregation has ever undertaken, with the possibility of generating profound transformation in our mission and ministry right here in New York City as well as our global engagement.

Mothers with Young Children
Support and Fellowship Group, October 20

The Congregational Nurture and Evangelism Committees are offering a new group for mothers of young children that will meet each Monday morning. We’ll have coffee, tea and conversation beginning at 9 am in the Youth Lounge and will begin the group meeting at 9:30, planning to end by 10:30. Come join in a time of fellowship, prayer and Bible study. There is childcare for infants and young toddlers who are not yet in preschool. Please let us know if you need childcare so we can be sure we have enough caregivers. Contact Beverly Bartlett, 212-288-8920 x247 or bab@mapc.com if you are interested or have further questions. To get to the Youth Lounge, use the Church House elevator bank to go to the 4th Floor, turn left out of the elevators and follow the signs!

Church Family Night, October 24

We’ll have a Church Family Night with a movie and meal that are child-friendly (but also appealing to adults) on October 24 beginning at 6 pm, ending no later than 9 pm. Children are invited to wear their Halloween costumes for a costume parade around the Parish Hall. We’ll have a special Halloween treat for dessert. It’s helpful to know you’re coming so our chef can prepare the right amount of food. RSVP to Soraida Maldonado at the church offices, 212-288-8920 x271, or sam@mapc.com.

Memorial Sunday, November 2; Deadline for Names, October 27

We have begun to receive the names of deceased loved-ones and friends to be remembered during the Eucharistic Prayer on Sunday, November 2. If you have someone whose name you would like included in print on the service bulletin and included in that prayer, please call our Church Office Manager, Arabel Bello, no later than Monday, October 27. Arabel can be reached at 212-288-8920 x245. The person need not have been a member of MAPC to have their name included in this prayer.

Jonathan Weaver Memorial Service, October 28, 11:30 am

The memorial service of Major Jonathan Weaver is scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, at 11:30 am, in the Sanctuary. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Jonathan’s ashes will be interred at the United States Army Military Academy at West Point on Monday, October 27.

Jonathan, the son of Marianne and John Weaver, was born shortly after his father became the Director of Music and Organist at MAPC, and he and his sister, the Rev. Kirianne Weaver, both grew up, quite literally, in the Church House. Jonathan was killed when a truck pulled out from the median in front of him as he was returning to Ft. Leavenworth, following a time of leave, in which he and his wife Meredith had been able to visit both of their families. Meredith had remained behind with her parents at their summer home in Michigan, planning to return the following week. A funeral was held for Jonathan in the church where they worshipped in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Seniors Unlimited Bus Trip, Wednesday, October 29

We have an exciting day planned for our fall bus trip. After requests from many participants of previous trips, we decided to take the leap and visit Philipsburg Manor and Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate.

First we will visit Philipsburg Manor, which is like stepping back in time to 1750. Philipsburg Manor was a farming, milling and trading center owned by the Philips family, who were Anglo-Dutch merchants. We will have a tour of the 300 year old Manor House and the working grist mill before enjoying a box lunch at the Mint Café on the grounds.

After lunch we will take the shuttle bus from the Visitor Center at Philipsburg, to Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate. As the Historic Hudson Valley website states, “Kykuit is a preeminent Hudson Valley landmark. For architecture, remarkable gardens, art, history, and spectacular scenery, a trip to Kykuit is simply amazing. This hilltop paradise was home to four generations of the Rockefeller family.” Our tour will take us through the main floor of the six-story stone house, the subterranean art galleries, as well as the Inner Garden and West Terrace containing Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller’s collection of 20th century sculpture and offering spectacular views of the Hudson River. The tour ends at the mammoth Coach Barn with its collection of antique carriages and classic automobiles.

The bus will depart at 10 am from in front of the church, and we hope to return to the church by 6 pm or shortly thereafter. In the past we have kept the price of the bus trips in the $30 to $35 range, but the significantly larger entrance fees for Kykuit and increased transportation costs necessitate a $60 cost for this trip. We trust it will be worth it! In addition to two beautiful, historic sites and gardens, there should be beautiful foliage and spectacular Hudson River Views. If you received a flyer and registration form in the mail, please return it ASAP!! If you did not receive the flyer and would like to go on the trip, please contact Arabel Bello at the church offices, 212-288-8920 x245, or via email at aeb@mapc.com.

Yorkville Common Pantry

The Yorkville Common Pantry would like canned soup, canned chunky soup, canned stew, canned fruits and vegetables, and boxed low-fat/shelf-stable milk in the month of September. Please drop these items off in the Narthex or at the Front Desk. They can always use assistance to help pack food for distribution on Saturday mornings and at certain other times each week. For details, please call YCP at 917-720-9710 and speak with Gladys at x110. Thanks everyone!
