Four Duo Recitals
February 2008
On Sundays during the month of February the Saint Andrew Music Society’s weekly concert series will present four duos performing fascinating programs.
All concerts begin at 3 pm in the MAPC Sanctuary.
February 3 – David Calhoun, cello and Peter Vinograde, piano
This recital will be the first of two recitals during which Calhoun and Vinograde will perform the complete works of Beethoven for cello and piano. Cellist David Calhoun is an active performer in New York’s music scene. In the 2005-2006 Season he performed as chamber artist in the esteemed Bargemusic Series, Maverick Concerts, the Brooklyn Museum chamber series, the Look and Listen Festival, as soloist at Symphony Space, and in his tenth season in year-round residence at the Metropolitan Museum with Orion Music. An outstanding interpreter of J.S. Bach and contemporary composers, pianist Peter Vinograde annually tours the U.S., Canada, and Asia. His most recent Asian appearances have included two China tours, one solo and another with the Macao Orchestra, and recitals in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Thailand with violinist Midori. They will perform Beethoven’s Sonata No. 1 (Op. 5, No. 1), Sonata No. 4 (Op. 102, No. 1), the Seven Variations in E-flat, and the U.S. premiere of Song Fragments for Cello and Piano (2001) by Michael Matthews.
February 10 – Amy Kim, cello and Seymour Lipkin, piano
Amy Kim has given solo recitals worldwide. She has performed to rave reviews in Europe at the Schumann Haus, the Franz Liszt Hochschule, the Salzburg Mozarteum, and Schloss Elmau, where she has been invited to reappear. The Sun Post said of her performance of the Lalo Concerto in Miami, “Ms. Kim proved to be an artist of sensibility. Her playing delighted the audience.” A student of Rudolf Serkin and Mieczyslaw Horszowski at the Curtis Institute of Music, Seymour Lipkin won the prestigious Rachmaninoff Competition at age 19. He went on to appear with all of America’s “top five” orchestras: The New York Philharmonic (several times), the Boston Symphony (repeatedly), the Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Chicago, as well as many other major American ensembles. Extremely active in chamber music, Mr. Lipkin has performed at the Marlboro festival, the Spoleto festival (both in Italy and US) and the Northfolk Festival. They will be performing Brahms’s Cello Sonatas in E minor and F major, and Schumann’s Fünf Stücke im Volkston.
February 17 – Miranda Cuckson, violin and Thomas Bagwell, piano Violinist Miranda Cuckson has a fast-growing reputation as a soloist, chamber musician, and exponent of contemporary music. She was recently praised by the New York Times as “a brilliant young performer who plays daunting contemporary music with insight, honesty, and temperament.” Acclaimed for her performances in the United States, Europe, and the Far East, she has appeared as soloist with orchestras including, among others, the Indianapolis Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia, Shanghai Symphony, Beijing Radio Orchestra, and on tour with conductor Yakov Kreizberg in Germany and Poland.
