A Palm Sunday performance of Bach’s stirring and monumental St. John Passion, sung in German. Composed and performed during Bach’s first year as the Cantor of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, the St. John Passion was first heard on Good Friday, 1724, and was often revived by Bach for performance during Holy Week up until the year before the composer’s death. The gospel account of Christ’s passion and death from John’s gospel account is presented through dramatically conceived recitatives and choruses, with moments of lyrical and poignant reflection in the solo arias and chorales.
