Matthew Gaventa Wins 2012 David H.C. Read Preacher-Scholar Award
The 2012 winner of the $20,000 David H.C. Read Preacher-Scholar Award is Matthew Gaventa, who received a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in May.
Matt Gaventa is a candidate for ordination in the Presbyterian Church (USA) with a 2012 Masters in Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. He lives in Princeton with his wife Sarah, Assistant Rector at Trinity Episcopal Church, and their year-old son Charlie. Matt and Sarah came from Charlottesville, Virginia, where Matt worked in the area of digital media and communications. There he came under care for ordination by Westminster Presbyterian Church in the Presbytery of the James. At PTS, Matt has focused extensively on Biblical studies and preaching, while also serving at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia and subsequently at Slackwood Presbyterian Church in Trenton. He is the recipient of the 2011 Lindquist Fellowship in Parish Ministry and the 2012 David Watermulder Award in Church Leadership. Matt holds a B.A. in English from Georgetown University and an M.A. in Film Studies from the University of Iowa. Matt is actively seeking a pastoral call in the Presbyterian Church; he and Sarah are curious and excited about where God will send them next. In the meantime, he is introducing Charlie to the best parts of summer: meals made with the freshest fruits and vegetables; the sights and sounds of baseball; the crisp air of a mountain hike.
